The Ontario government has enacted a new drinking water regulation under the the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002. Effective June 1, 2003, the Drinking Water Systems Regulation (O.Reg. 170/03) replaced the Drinking Water Protection Regulation for Larger Waterworks (O. Reg. 459/00) and the Drinking Water Protection Regulation for Smaller Waterworks Serving Designated Facilities (O. Reg. 505/01).
Province-wide Consultations by the Advisory Council for Drinking Water Quality and Testing Standards
The Advisory Council is an arm's-length group of experts consulting on the Drinking Water Systems Regulation (Reg. 170) as it pertains to smaller, private water systems. They are holding public consultations across Ontario between October 25 and November 3, 2004.

Non-Municipal Drinking Water Systems
The Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002 (SDWA) and the Drinking Water Testing Services Regulation (O. Reg. 248/03) require any laboratory that performs drinking water testing to obtain a licence effective October 1, 2003. In addition, the SDWA requires owners and operating authorities of drinking water systems regulated under the Drinking Water Systems Regulation (O. Reg. 170/03) to use a licensed laboratory for drinking water testing.
